Does Amtrak search your bags?
Amtrak does conduct random bag checks and passengers may be subject to screening by uniformed Amtrak police officers, but it does not have the same level of security measures as the TSA at airports.
Each traveler can check up to 4 bags (2 free and 2 at $20 per bag). Size/weight limitations apply.
With due respect to passengers' privacy, the random and unannounced screening and inspection of passengers and their personal items is completed as quickly as possible - usually in less than a minute.
Unlike many transportation options, traveling with Amtrak is twice as nice with our generous baggage policy. When you travel with us, you can bring: one personal item, 25 lbs. (12 kg) and 14 x 11 x 7 inches.

All Amtrak trains, Thruway buses and stations are entirely non-smoking. No one may smoke anything in any area on trains, on Thruway services, in stations or in any other location where smoking is prohibited. This includes: Electronic smoking devices, such as electronic cigarettes.
You may bring aboard your own private stock of alcoholic beverages subject to the following limitations: You may consume private stock alcoholic beverages only in Sleeping Car accommodations for which you have a valid ticket. You may not consume private stock alcoholic beverages in any public areas.
It is your constitutional right to say no to a search. Refusing a search protects you if you end up in court. In court, the officer will have to prove that there was probable cause to do a warrantless search and this will give your lawyer a good chance to win your case.
All firearms (rifles, shotguns, handguns, taser guns, starter pistols) must be unloaded and in an approved, locked hard-sided container not exceeding 62" L x 17" W x 7" D (1575 mm x 432 mm x 178 mm). The passenger must have sole possession of the key or the combination for the lock to the container.
Amtrak protects rail infrastructure with traditional solutions such as high security fencing, lighting, access control and video surveillance systems, it is also exploring and evaluating emerging technologies to improve security levels.

Passengers are allowed to bring their nonalcoholic beverages and food on Amtrak trains. This policy applies to all Amtrak seat classes. When you bring your own food and drinks, however, they can be consumed only in your ticketed seat or private sleeper car.

TSA's scope includes commercial and general aviation; mass transit systems; freight and passenger rail; highways; pipelines; and maritime.
Amtrak does operate its own police force (with true law enforcement officer powers, unlike airport TSA), but they are more interested in handling actual crimes than wasting time playing security theater at hundreds of stations spread across extremely rural portions of the country.
It will count as one of your carry on bags. You may bring your own food, so a cooler can be used, but a lot of the coolers will exceed luggage size limitations, and with ice, probably the weight limits. See their webpage for the limits. You are not permitted to consume alcohol in the Coach car.
The following items are prohibited onboard the train: non-service animals, firearms and ammunition, hover boards, corrosive or dangerous chemicals and materials, incendiaries, martial arts and self-defense items, archery equipment, devices containing propellants, sharp objects, and similar items.
However, it is important to note that Amtrak prohibits the use of electronic smoking devices, including vape pens, on all Amtrak trains and in all Amtrak stations.
You may bring your own food and beverages onboard for consumption at your seat or private Sleeping Car accommodations. However, you can only consume food and beverages purchased in Dining and Lounge Cars in those cars. Personal food and beverages are allowed in the upper level of Superliner Sightseer Lounges.
Their speed, however, will be limited by the complexities of the 457-mile route, which is old, curvy and carries a mix of freight, commuter and intercity trains. Most Amtrak trains travel between 110 mph to 145 mph in the corridor, depending on the track and proximity to stations.

Do Amtrak private rooms lock?
You can lock the door when you are inside the roomette, but you cannot lock it from the outside, so avoid leaving valuables in the roomette when you are not there. Bedrooms offer larger private accommodations at an extra cost. The only non-private seating on Amtrak trains is coach seating.
If the passenger does not produce a valid ticket or proof of payment, the conductor may ask them to pay the fare or exit the train at the next station.
Following federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) guidelines, we regularly conduct random ticket verification checks onboard trains to ensure that passengers are properly ticketed. Please be prepared to show valid photo identification to a member of the onboard crew upon request.
Passengers must travel on the same train as those checked firearms and-or ammunition. Under Amtrak's guidelines, all firearms must be unloaded and in an approved, locked hard-sided container. Traveling with Car Seats
Passengers traveling with an infant/small child in a child car seat may place the seat in a vacant seat only if it is not needed for a paying passenger; children under 2 years of age may be required to ride on the passenger's lap and the child car seat stored in an appropriate baggage area.
